Nigerian singer Rema’s single “Calm Down” has gone gold in the U.S. after selling over 500,000 copies.
The record was certified on November 30 which means that its author joins other Afrobeats acts such as Burna Boy, Wizkid, Davido, and Tems who have each achieved a similar distinction in the US.
The achievement comes three months after “Calm Down” became a certified diamond record in France after surpassing 50 million streams.
Released by Mavin Global/Jonzing World, the song is taken from Rema’s debut album, Rave & Roses, which was released in March. It is co-produced by Andre Vibez and Michael ‘London’ Hunter.
‘Calm Down’, which was recently updated with a new verse from American singer Selena Gomez, currently has 258 million streams on YouTube and ended 2022 as the ninth most streamed song on Spotify in Nigeria.
Last month, it also became the first track to top the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry’s new singles chart for the Middle East and North Africa.
“I would like to thank all my fans in the region who listened to ‘Calm Down’ and helped it become the very first number one on the official MENA chart,” Rema said. “I am very happy that you are enjoying this song and very proud to be the first artist to reach number 1. Thanks also to my label team for their support.”
